img alt is meant for when the img is _not_ displayed, as an _alternative_.  There&#039;s no need to display the alt text when the image is shown (which is why Firefox doesn&#039;t do it).

The funny thing indeed is that Flickr takes advantage here from an incorrect implementation of the img alt attr in IE...

By choosing the image description for alt and &quot;photo sharing&quot; for the link, Flickr pleases both the 90% IE users (that see the description pop-up) and teach the search engines (ànd Firefox, ànd probably screen readers) that the linked site is all about photo sharing...</description>
